Kitty Bartholomew: You're Home : Episode KIT-507

Designers for the Santa Fe Designer Showcase House share tips with Kitty Bartholomew for creating a unified look in home decor.

Designer Marsha Paine shows Kitty Bartholomew how she used dark colors in a large room to create a more intimate feeling. She painted the walls a warm charcoal gray and used poppy red as an accent color. The cream-colored carpeting (the same carpet recently installed in the White House dining room) has a tone-on-tone pattern that is interesting rather than busy. Paine recommends buying a small can of colorful paint and painting an entire area of a wall rather than a small patch, and living with the color for a few days before taking the plunge to paint the whole room.

In the dining room, designer Kim Etherton chose a warm yellow-red for the wall color and paired it with yellow French toile curtains. The warmer red is a happy color, she says, and noted that the color stimulates the appetite.

Susan Geier used a pale palette of cream and peachy-beige throughout the open space that functions as living room, dining room and kitchen in the Santa Fe Showcase House guest cottage. She explains to Kitty Bartholomew how she created a "slipcover" for the oversized fireplace by building a large mantel that slipped into place and brought the fireplace into scale with the rest of the room. The whole room was brightened when dark green ceiling beams were painted a light cream, and the wood floors were lightened. The multifunctional space was unified by using a cream wainscoting throughout .
